When I was a Kid This Was a Free Country
By G. Gordon Liddy
A Review
Defensive Concepts

The G Man is back! G. Gordon Liddy has published his second non-fiction book and it is
a keeper. This offering is a worthy follow up to his autobiography, Will. It compliments
Will in that the autobiography shows what shaped the man. When I Was A Kid gives
insight to exactly what he thinks. More importantly, Liddy explains exactly why he thinks
and believes as he does.

The book covers a wide variety of topics. Beginning with him meeting a veteran of
D-Day, Liddy gives his views on Liberties Lost (a truly timely chapter), Americans and
Their Guns, Education, The Environment, The Military, Of Men and Women and Survive
or Prevail (one of my favorites). An appendix to the book gives what Liddy, after a lot of
post incarceration research, believes to be the truth behind the Watergate burglaries which
first brought him to fame (or infamy depending on your point of view).

Liddy's writing is marvelous. Where he could just give dry facts and rhetoric he
expounds on the subject at hand as a master story teller. Have a dictionary handy, though.
His vocabulary is extensive and he's not afraid to use it. Common sense reigns in this
book. Whether he talks about the nonsense of political correctness, debunks global
warming, explains the meaning of the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution (for
those that have a problem understanding the English language) or illustrates the
difference between surviving and prevailing, Liddy is someone who's opinion is worth
considering.

I did have two complaints about the book. First is that Liddy's writing style makes for
a very easy read. I went through it in one day. This left me feeling like a child in a candy
store who's father let him have a chocolate bar. I wanted MORE! The second complaint
is that he did not write a similar book earlier in his life. The chapter on men and women
alone would have saved me a lot of grief and considerable attorney's fees.

Save a place on your bookshelf for this one. Liddy is fond of saying that he wants to
cut through the nitwittery that is so prevalent in our society. He succeeds in doing so with
this offering.
